Environmental Science Water Quality Planner

Helena MT


Montana’s rivers, streams, and lakes are highly prized for their recreation, aquatic life, drinking, and agriculture uses. Additional Salary Information:

The salary range for this position is $39,446 to $ $47,829 annually. Additionally, benefits include; health, life, dental, paid leave, optional vision and a state matched retirement fund. Total benefits package equals $16,042. Salary will be set according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and existing salary relationships.

Duties:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist with water quality planning tasks that include public outreach, TMDL technical assistance, field work, and TMDL document preparation.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

The person selected for this position will be rated at Annual Performance Reviews on, at minimum, the following skills/behaviors: Communication, Customer Service, Integrity, Safety, Teamwork, Analytical Thinking, Change Management, Environmental Science, Governmental Operations, Initiative, Innovative Thinking, Judgment (decision making), Productivity and Written Expression.

Specific Skills and Behaviors necessary to this position include:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information in a public forum.
  • Problem solving skills
  • The ability to effectively manage multiple complex tasks
  • The ability to work within a collaborative teamwork environment
  • Ability to work with a variety of interest groups and the general public.
  • Ability to write and edit technical documents.

Education and Experience:

Qualifications for this position include a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, aquatic biology, limnology, hydrology, natural resource management, or a closely related field. Qualifications also include 3 or more years of relevant work experience in environmental science and/or implementing environmental policy. Desirable experience includes water resource management, water quality sampling and analysis, technical document preparation, nonpoint source management, and public outreach. Other desirable areas of experience include GIS, Microsoft Office, and statistical applications. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by case basis.
