Join our team as we lead the nation in energy efficiency, environmental education and community engagement!

Seattle Parks and Recreation's Environmental Education Unit seeks an experienced Naturalist for a .75 benefited position. This role will develop and implement natural science and urban environmental education programs for our city's diverse populations. 

The Naturalist will report to the Supervisor of Environmental Education and will be one of three community liaisons, bringing urban environmental education to underserved communities.

Programs designed will celebrate and explore our urban and natural environments. These programs may include public nature walks, school field trips and nature-study projects; all to promote an environment of Healthy People, a Healthy Environment and Strong Communities.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years' experience building community partnerships and coordinating programing with communities, including at least 6 months of experience supervising volunteers.
  • Bachelor degree in natural sciences, ecology, education, community service, community relations or a related field - or a combination of education, training and experience which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of the naturalist.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years' experience developing community based curriculum for urban environmental programs
  • Relevant experience working with diverse age groups, from youth to adult
  • Knowledge of Pacific NW forest ecology and local flora/fauna and their interrelationships and the impacts from humans on the natural environment
  • Ability to make connections between the urban and natural environment and make current critical environmental issues relevant to diverse audiences
  • Experience teaching environmental justice
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching ethnobotany and indigenous practices with regard to the native NW habitat
  • Ability to work cohesively in a team or partnership setting, as well as independently.
  • Creativity, resourcefulness, flexibility, and initiative.
  • Cultural competency and strong commitment to work with underserved/under-resourced diverse communities
  • Certification from the National Association of Interpretation or a WA Teaching Certificate
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and maintain safety among program participants
  • Ability to take direction and feedback in a constructive manner.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Tagalog, East African languages, Chinese or Vietnamese
  • Fluent in the use of PowerPoint, Excel, Class Program Registration, Point of Sale, Facility Booking, Volgistics and ARC budgeting tools.
 License, Certification and Other Requirements: 
  • Current valid State of Washington driver's license 
  • First aid and CPR certificate within six months of hire.
