Friends of the Earth is fighting to champion the environment and create a more healthy and just world. We seek a North Carolina campaigner to develop and lead a new body of work within Friends of the Earth to protect the environment of North Carolina and the Southeast United States. He/she will provide campaign advice, support and implementation for a select range of national Friends of the Earth campaigns, on issues from sustainable food systems to democracy reform. He/she will be the voice of Friends of the Earth in policy debates, media, and coalition work; and particularly lead a project to increase the political effectiveness of regional environmental justice organizations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
With the Vice President of Programs, develop and lead a new body of work for Friends of the Earth with the goal of protecting the environment of North Carolina and the Southeast more broadly. This work will include participating in and leading environmental advocacy efforts at the state level.
Work closely with Friends of the Earth campaigners to provide strategic advice on localizing national campaigns to the North Carolina/ Southeast context, and potentially support local campaign implementation. In particular, work with Sr. Democracy Campaigner to develop and implement a (501c3) environmental campaign that will support democracy reform efforts in North Carolina, particularly relating to redistricting and other voter suppression efforts.
Work with Friends of the Earth staff to analyze the impacts of federal environmental policy proposals and private sector/corporate activities on North Carolina’s environment and communities.
Represent FOE among policymakers, the media and with others in the environmental and advocacy community. In particular, reach out to and collaborate with regional environmental justice organizations to organize training academy to enhance the political effectiveness of progressive grassroots groups in the region.
As needed, work with and support the Organizing and Development Departments, including FOE’s team of Southeast-based national grassroots organizers.
Three-five years campaign or community organizing experience.
Skills and Knowledge
A demonstrated commitment to the environment and social justice.
Background in environment and/or democracy reform preferred but not required.
Knowledge and understanding of North Carolina political landscape.
Relationships with regional progressive organizations a plus.
Ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to inspire trust and respect among colleagues and external partners.
Strong oral and written communication skills and comfort with presenting material to a wide range of audiences, including the public, the press, businesses and government officials.
Excellent decision-making skills, professional initiative, time management, prioritization and networking skills, flexibility and creativity.
The successful candidate will be an independent “self-starter.”
